After some time in the dark, Alan Wake 2 has now been given an October 17, 2023 release date.

The initial reveal trailer confirmed Alan Wake 2 will be released on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and the Epic Games store.

In a PlayStation Blog released on December 9, Creative Director at Remedy Entertainment Sam Lake gave some insight into what fans can expect from the Alan Wake sequel. While he remained tight-lipped on the story, he revealed players should expect a more horror-focused survival game.

“Whereas the first Alan Wake had horror elements in it, it was an action game… Alan Wake 2 is Remedy’s first survival horror game, our take on the genre, our opportunity to truly connect the gameplay and the story, it is a deep, layered mystery.”

Following up with the May 12 community update, new concept art for the sequel was on display. This artwork revealed a number of new environments and even revealed one of the more ominous-looking characters we’ve seen thus far in the series.

During the 2023 Summer Game Fest, it was also revealed that Alan Wake 2 will feature a second protagonist. Alongside Mr. Wake himself, players will also control Saga Anderson, a detective looking to piece together a horrifying mystery seemingly written to life by the famous author.

Devs have implied that players will have the ability to control when they’d like to swap between the two characters, rather than being forced over to one or the other with each passing chapter.

Beyond that, we also know the game is shaping up to be quite a bigger experience than the first. While still a ways off, devs have confirmed Alan Wake 2 is looking to clock in at “over 20 hours.”
